I’m Christian, er, have been living in Berlin for 8 Years now, am from Munich, have Peruan roots, too, so, come from a lot of areas. (laughs)Yes, and – immediatly evaluating? Well, I well, good in Berlin, feel well, yes.

What brought you to Berlin?

Studies.

What do you study?

Geography. The reason why I’m running around here now (laughs) because I’d normally have to write my diploma thesis and …er… am desperately fleeing my desk. (laughs) Er..,yes. And I’m doing my shopping.

Where did you go shopping, in what shop?

Market at the Boxi (Boxhagener Platz) and Schlecker.

What are you writing your Diploma thesis about?

O, complicated subject (laughs) „Decentralisation of state structures“.

It’s a political-geographical study, yes.

Where are you walking right now?

Well, I live down here and actually, I could go straight home now, then I would be there in two minutes time, but I thought, I go for another round more (laughs)to take a bit more oxygen in for the desk.

Have you been living here for 8 years or did you live elsewhere in Berlin, too?

Oh, no, I lived in Neukölln once, I lived in Kreuzberg once, em, right at the beginning in Tiergarten and now, for 5 years, in Friedrichshain.

And what is the special thing for you about Friedrichshain, compared to the other city blocks, as well?

Well, it it has changed a lot, that is, I don’t like it that much anymore, the way it is now, because, er, they do a lot of shop window policy here, that means, one bar after the other is standing here, only, one bar is a copy of another bar, you know, and that is, actually, er, let me say, it has become more of such a tourist area, well, it has a bit of the Mallorca-Effect, ad I can’t stand Mallorca (laughs) and yes, I’m playing with the thought to move back to Kreuzberg, so … because here it’s a bit too overcrowded for me. And because also the rental prices, yes, everything here has become more expensive, you know. Also because of all the reconstruction stuff.

Also since ’89, I mean, was there a big cut, or has it only developped over the years?

I don’t know that, I only moved here, er, 2000, 2001, somewhere around that, I don’t really know anymore and, er, most houses here were un-refurbished then, extremly cheap, coal oven, ok, that wasn’t the problem either, but now … I pay double the rental price compared to what I payed before, you know… and it’s becoming a rather yuppie-area, that is also nerve-racking me a bit. Even if most people think, it is a multi-cultural area, of course, it’s that, too, because it’s also attractive ... let’s put it like that: Friedrichshain is very fragmented. That is so that the houses that are refurbished, also for a class that is financially better suited, you know, and at the same time, there is still a, let’s say, big lower class here, as well, so can see that, can’t you, so it’s rather fragmented.

Are you writing your thesis specifically about Friedrichshain as well?

No, I’m writing my thesis about … yes, about Peru, so (laughs)

What has become for you today already, and what do you think, do you hope, do you fear that today will become for you?

What has become for me today already (laughs) and what will become? Well, I had a good breakfast and a good sleep, had a nice walk, and hope that now I can find the discipline to endure a few hours at the desk (laughs), yes.

When are you hoping to be finished with your thesis, or when is the plan …

Yes, phhh, that will bet two, three months still.

And then?

Theeeennnn … I would have to go looking for a job as well, yes. (laughs)

Ich bin Christian, ähm, leb jetzt seit 8 Jahren in Berlin, komm aus München, ähm .. hab peruanische Wurzeln noch, also, komm’ aus vielen Ecken. (lacht) Ja, und, gleich bewerten? Also, ich fühl mich gut in Berlin, fühl mich wohl, ja….

Was hat dich nach Berlin gebracht?

Studium.

Was studierst du?

Geografie. Der Grund, warum ich jetzt hier rum laufe (lacht) weil ich eigentlich Diplomarbeit schreiben müsste und ähm verzweifelt vor meinem Schreibtisch fliehe. (lacht) Ähm, ja. Und beim Einkaufen bin.

Wo warst du grad einkaufen, in was für nem Geschäft?

Markt am Boxi (Boxhagener Platz) und Schlecker.

Worüber schreibst du deine Diplomarbeit?

Oh, kompliziertes Thema (lacht) „Dezentralisierung staatlicher Strukturen“.

Es is ’ne politisch-geographische Studie, ja.

Wo läufst du grad hin?

Ja, also ich wohn jetzt hier unten und ich könnt eigentlich direkt nach Hause gehen, dann wär ich in zwei Minuten da, aber ich hab mir gedacht, ich dreh noch ne Runde mehr (lacht) um bisschen Sauerstoff für den Schreibtisch zu tanken.

Lebst du seit 8 Jahren hier oder hast du woanders in Berlin gelebt.

Oh, nee, ich hab in Neukölln mal gelebt, ich hab mal in Kreuzberg gelebt, em, ganz am Anfang in Tiergarten, und jetzt seit 5 Jahren hier in Friedrichshain.

Und was ist für dich so das Besondere von Friedrichshain, auch im Vergleich so zu den andern Stadtteilen?

Ja, es es hat sich sehr verändert, also ich finds nicht mehr so gut, wie’s jetzt is, weil ähm, es wird hier ziemlich viel Schaufensterpolitik betrieben, das heißt, eine Kneipe nach der andern steht hier, nur eine Kneipe is ne Kopie vonner anderen Kneipe, ne, und das is eigentlich ähm ich sach mal mehr so ne Touri-Gegend geworden, also, hat ’n bisschen so den Mallorca-Effekt, und ich kann Mallorca nicht ausstehen (lacht) und, ja ich spiel deswegen auch schon mit dem Gedanken, wieder nach Kreuzberg zu ziehen, also.. weil mir das n bisschen hier zu überlaufen wird. Und weil auch Mietpreise, ja alles ist hier teurer geworden, ne. Auch wegen dem ganzen Sanierungszeug.

Auch seit ’89, also war da n großer Einschnitt, oder ist das erst im Laufe der Jahre entstanden?

Ich weiß es nicht, ich bin erst hierher gezogen, äh, 2000, 2001, irgendwie so um den Dreh, ich weiß es gar nich mehr genau, und, äh, die meisten Häuser warn hier noch unsaniert, supergünstig, Kohleofen, ok, das ist auch nicht so das Problem gewesen, aber jetz …also, ich zahl jetzt das Doppelte der Miete, also was ich vorher gezahlt hab, ne …und es wird halt auch hier ne ziemliche Yuppie-Gegend, also das nervt mich auch’n bisschen. Auch wenn jetzt die meisten meinen, es is so ne Multi-Kulti-Gegend, klar is es auch, weil es is ja auch attraktiv … sagn mer so, Friedrichshain ist ziemlich fragmentiert. Also so dass, die Häuser, die sehr saniert werden, auch für ne besser finanziell gestellte Klasse, ne, und gleichzeitig gibt’s aber doch auch noch ’ne sach ich mal… große Unterschicht hier, das sieht man ja auch, ne, also ist ziemlich fragmentiert.

Schreibst du deine Arbeit speziell auch über Friedrichshain?

Nein, ich schreib meine Arbeit über … ja, über Peru, also (lacht)

Was ist für dich heut schon geworden, und was denkst du, hoffst du, befürchtest du, was für dich heute noch wird?

Was ist für mich heut schon geworden (lacht) und was wird? Ja, ich hab gut gefrühstückt, gut geschlafen, schönen Spaziergang gehabt, und hoff, dass ich jetzt die Disziplin find, paar Stunden am Schreibtisch auszuhalten (lacht), ja.

Wann wirst du deine Arbeit hoffentlich beenden, oder wann ist der Plan …

Ja, phh, wird noch so, zwei, drei Monate dauern. Ja.

Und dann?

Dannnnn – müsst ich mir auch mal nen Job suchen, ja. (lacht)
