I had a great time with the tie.ing together project! The weather was beautiful, and the blocks we encircled displayed human artistic expression everywhere, from miniature graffiti to huge sunflower murals to fences built from criss-crossing 4" nails. The project, at least at the Hongdae site, symbolized the tying together of the spectrum of korean to american cultures, as the participants ranged native koreans and native US citizens to those who spent a considerable portion in each country. Although the strings didn't seem to last longer than a day or two, the excitement, the photographs, the stares, the thoughts of dragging the string inconspicuously so the ahjumma won't yell at you for littering in front of her shop, and most definitely the company made the event a great success in my mind.

독특한 개성의 인테리어와 구조, 익살스런 벽화로 꾸며진 공간들 덕에 예술의 거리라고 불리는 홍대거리에서 국적을 달리한 참가자들이 “사람들을 연결시키고 그들을 하나로 묶는다”라는 의도 하에 기획된 Tie.ing Together Project 아래 하나로 묶여 형형색색의 끈을 가지고 문자 Tie를 따라가며 각자 방식대로 고유의 작품을 만들었다. 나는 엉망진창으로 얽혀버려 도저히 풀리지 않는 실을 가위로 싹둑 싹둑 잘라내며 전봇대와 건물에 되는대로 묶어 기괴한 모습의 작품을 연출해냈고 그 모습에서 도저히 화합되지 못하고 한 곳에 묶여 버린 불협화음 가득한 관계들을 떠올렸다. 또한 한 행인과 어린 소녀와는 실을 함께 묶으면서 무한히 열려 있는 관계의 가능성을 생각했다. 또 다른 참가자 준영은 서로 멀리 떨어져 있거나 헐거워진 끈들 사이를 이으면서 끈 사이를 공고히 하는 역할을 했다. 우리는 단순히 “묶는” 행위에 그치지 않고 행위에서 의미를 찾아내고 숙고하는 시간을 가졌다. 한국에는 “옷깃만 스쳐도 인연이다.”라는 표현이 있다. 여기에는 사람 사이의 만남을 귀중히 여기는 한국인의 정신이 담겨있다. 이 프로젝트를 통해 우리는 수많은 낯선 이들과 옷깃을 스쳤고 새로운 인연을 만들었으며 관계와 인연에 대해 생각할 기회를 가졌다. 이런 이유로 Tie.ing Together Project는 인연을 소중히 여기는 한국인인 나에게 그 의미가 컸다.
